HUIPPU is a contemporary folk band formed in autumn 2023. Coming from different parts of Finland, the six members met while studying at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and were brought together by a shared love for contemporary folk music and a desire to form a new band.
At the heart of HUIPPU's music are compositions by all six members. Their music draws inspiration from Nordic and Irish folk traditions, with influences from pop and indie music. All six members have an equal role in the creative process, and the music is shaped collectively through arranging and playing together.
HUIPPU quickly established itself on the Finnish folk music scene following the release of their debut album Haikankärki in 2025 and their selection for the Showcase programme at the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival. Since then, the band has performed at numerous concerts and festivals across Finland and abroad, including the Shetland Folk Festival (UK) and Paléo Festival (CH), which was named the best European festival of 2025. Haikankärki (2025) presents HUIPPU's distinctive sound through fresh tunes, catchy melodies, and a bright, driving energy. Their second album, Huiputusta (2026), refines this sound further. Fierce fiddling, gradually unfolding soundscapes, moments of tranquility, and, at times, unstoppable grooves come together to create something new.
HUIPPU's music evokes impressions of a quiet riverbank, the vibrant colours of autumn foliage, pounding feet on the dance floor, a swallow's first flight, and wistful homelonging.
The band’s name translates roughly as the best, top-notch, or summit. The name set the bar high from the very beginning and the band has been reaching for new HUIPPUs ever since.
